Sexism has become synonymous with Trump’s campaign: from his comments about women over the years to his endless interruptions during the debate to the video recording released last week.
Trump’s chauvinist shadow may consume center stage, but Cooper’s question to Secretary Clinton regarding the ACA should also raise concerns, in particular as Clinton was asked about her husband’s opinions rather than her own.
To ask a presidential candidate, and especially the first female presidential candidate of a major party, to speak about her husband’s opinion illustrates underlying inequalities present in the system. Consider Clinton’s history as a proponent of expanding healthcare coverage, her championing of CHIP, her obliteration of Obama in the November 16, 2007 debate regarding healthcare coverage.
Such a question undermines her professional experience and achievements, regardless of whether you agree with the policies themselves. It represents the more subtle shades of sexism present in the election and our society.
